Plus, the ingredients to look out for

It won’t be surprising to hear that our skin changes as we age, with the most prominent signs of ageing taking shape as fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. If you’ve exhausted your skincare arsenal trying to keep these signs at bay, why not try seeing what your makeup can do? Below, we round up some of our favourite anti-ageing makeup products for creating youthful, glowing skin.

The Country & Town House Responsible Buyers’ Guide

6 Anti-Ageing Ingredients To Look Out For

1. Retinol

One of the most effective ingredients in skincare, retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps to even out skin texture, reduce wrinkles and even crack down on blemishes and enlarged pores. Dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Dendy Engelman explains that, ‘since retinol helps with overall textural and tone improvement, it can be beneficial for numerous different signs of ageing. It helps with cell turnover, making skin look more youthful. It also helps to support skin’s natural collagen and elastin, thus improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.’

2. Peptides

Another skincare buzzword, peptides are short chains of amino acids that can stimulate collagen – improving your skin’s overall elasticity. In makeup, you’ll typically find peptides in foundations and creams.

3. Hyaluronic Acid

A powerful humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin, hyaluronic acid helps to plump up skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. It also delivers a good hydration boost to stop your skin drying out. You’ll find this ingredient in foundations and concealers, mostly.

4. Antioxidants

While there are hundreds of different types of antioxidants, the most popular ones you’ll find in skincare are vitamins C and E. Antioxidants help to protect skin from free radicals (unstable molecules that damage skin cells) and environmental damage. Packed into foundations, concealers and primers, antioxidants can improve the overall look of your skin.

5. Niacinamide

With anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to improve the texture and tone of skin, niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) is another ingredient to look out for on your makeup labels. You can usually find niacinamide in foundations and tinted moisturisers.

6. Glycerine

Glycerine is a humectant (a water-absorbing substance) that can retain moisture in the skin, making it great for hydration and plumping. It also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and create a more supple appearance.
