Cue the mermaid wave: a loose, effortless-looking hairstyle that evokes beachy waves. ‘The mermaid wave as worn by Sadie Sink at the Venice film festival,’ says Halley Brisker, celebrity hair stylist and Viviscal brand ambassador. ‘This one looks best on long hair and is styled as not quite a curl, not quite a wave.’

The 70s Shag

Nostalgia is everywhere right now. Many of us are looking to past decades for inspiration on how we dress, what we listen to and what we watch (thank you, Stranger Things). It should be no surprise then that we’re starting to see more throwback hair trends, like the classic shag. Halley emphasises that the shag has been gaining momentum more recently as a stand out hairstyle: ‘The shag is comprised of long bangs and heavy layering around the front. This is a hairstyle that works well with a nice balayage and a flicky blowout, as demonstrated by musician Suki Waterhouse.’

Jaw Length Bob

Not a fan of long hair? No worries. As we said, waves and textured tresses are set to be a big hit – regardless of hair length. If you’re thinking of trying a bob or taming mid-length strands into submission, Halley recommends a short jaw length bob with straight bangs. ‘It’s best worn with a slight natural texture and looks great under a beanie in winter, with minimal styling needed.’

The Wolf Cut

Perhaps the coolest trend to hail from TikTok, the Wolf Cut is an edgier style that’s been popular with teens and twenty-somethings over the last – but it’s quickly gaining momentum. ‘The wolf cut is huge which is a modern take on the classic mullet mixed with the shag,’ says Michelle Sultan, Creative Director and ambassador of Imbue. ‘It looks great on all hair textures whether straight, wavy or curly, and can be adjusted to work with most face shapes too.’

Hair Colours

Luxurious Copper

Redheads rejoice, this is the season for you. ‘Copper has a variety of tones such as auburn, bright copper, strawberry blonfe and burnt orange,’ says Sian Quinn, Colour Ambassador for Headmasters. ‘We’re now seeing rich copper tones throughout, with a lot more richness through the ends of the hair paired with a natural root melt.’

Chestnut Brown

As is to be expected, autumn signals the return of a rich colour palette. ‘The biggest hair trend I have seen is the warm coppery, chestnut browns this season,’ says Michelle. ‘This year more than ever people are leaning into warm tones which always looks great on all skin tones. It’s also much less damaging than bleaching hair, as this look can be done using semi-permanent colours and wash-in colours that are much more gentle on the hair.’

Babylights Balyage

The trend that never seems to fall out of fashion, balyage is back once again – but this time in babylights. ‘Babylights balayage is also really big,’ says Michelle. ‘This is finer pieces of balayage on the ends to accentuate the haircut and the moment of the hair. This is great for people who haven’t had colour before but want to try something new as it gives a softer grow out and also lasts longer (which is great on the pocket during the cost of living crisis).’

Dragon Blonde

Another micro hair colour trend expected to be big this season is Dragon Blonde, a surprising contrast to the rich shades of brown and copper we see each autumn. ‘Dragon blonde is an updated version of ice and platinum blonde that has become popular again thanks for House of the Dragon,’ says Lucy Robertson, Brand Representative for Bblonde. ‘It’s a very white blonde with cool undertones, it’s the perfect shade to take through the seasons as we look for more icy tones that are wearable but also help us stand out from the crowd.’
